The History of Woodside

The town of Woodside was laid out by James and William Johnston in 1850 and was surveyed by G. E. Duval in 1856. It was named after James Johnston’s home town in Scotland. Located alongside the Onkaparinga River, Woodside began as a private settlement in which riverside allotments were quickly taken up. The town then grew rapidly with the commencement of gold mining in the area.

At Inverbrackie you will find the 16th Air Defence Regiment, Australian Army.
Inverbrackie was originally a settlement, prior to becoming a Defence Department Mobilisation Store and Camp in 1926.

Modern-day Woodside is the hub of the Onkaparinga community. The Adelaide Hills council Chambers, Police, Ambulance and Country Fire Service stations are all located in the town. Woodside also has its own library, swimming centre, primary school and kindergarten.

The Woodside Commerce Association holds a Christmas Parade annually for the benefit of the community.
